MIMIC (EARTH-12)

MIMIC (EARTH-12)

Real Name: Calvin Montgomery Rankin
First Appearance: Exiles (Vol. 1) #1, August 2001

Powers: The Mimic of Earth-12 is the mutant counterpart of the Mimic of Earth-616, who manifested his superhuman mutant power through a chemical accident.

The Mimic-12 possesses mostly the same ability: His power constantly emits invisible psionic waves into his environment that perform a full-spectrum genetic scan on anyone nearby. These psionic waves are constantly searching for psycho-genetic templates to lock onto and whenever a person enters his broadcasting radius, Mimic's power scans them and transmits back information that his mind and body incorporate by rearranging his physical and genetic structure. Like his counterpart, his power is psychomimetic allowing him to draw on the factual knowledge of others. He also adopts pure physical skills, immediately becoming the strongest and most skilled football player on the field. Chiefly, of course, is his ability to mimic the superhuman powers of others, be they physical, psionic, or energy-based.

The Mimic-12's power slightly differs from his counterpart's in that he has far more control of his powers and doesn't have to mimic any templates he doesn't choose to. However, he can only manifest 50% the power level of any ability he mimics, though. He can also only adopt five different templates at any given time, though this means five different sources, not powers (Wolverine's senses, claws, and healing factor still counts as just one template, for instance). Like his counterpart, the Mimic-12 can immediately mimic any person who comes into his range, and the power will normally fade after they leave his range. However, he has the option of permanently adapting a set of powers if he stays in someone's presence for about 30-60 minutes. If he does, the Mimic-12 retains those powers until he chooses to drop them or exchange them for another set.

His limit still remains five templates, though, no matter the combination of temporary or permanent sets. He began with the powers of the original Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl, and Iceman, but by the time he joined the Exiles he had switched out the last two for Colossus and Wolverine. He dropped the Angel powers in order to temporarily mimic Dark Phoenix, and picked up Northstar's flight powers on the next world. After being horrifically wounded battling Hyperion, he switched out Beast's power for additional healing abilities from Deadpool. It was with this set of Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Northstar, and Deadpool that he died.
