MYSTERIO I

MYSTERIO I

Real Name: Quentin Beck
First Appearance: The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #2, May 1963 (as Quentin Beck); The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #13, June 1964 (as Mysterio)

Powers: No superhuman powers. Quentin Beck was a Hollywood stuntman and special effects designer created the guise of Mysterio for criminal purposes. He uses a specially-designed costume and hidden gimmicks to accomplish his various feats. His fishbowl headset is opaque to disguise his features, but allows him to see out clearly. It also contains a recycled air supply to protect him from the various smoke and gas tricks he employs, as well as a sonar-like system that he uses to navigate through his cloaking mist. His cape is held on by a pair of clasps with elaborate eye-motifs, which can produce hypnotic or dazzling flashes of light. The cape itself can be electrified or can be detached and then explode in a matter of seconds after he separates from it. His boots are equipped with springs and clamps, allowing him to bounce over exaggerated heights and distances or cling to walls and ceilings. He employs magnesium flares and a number of different chemical gases released from his gloves, boots or elsewhere on his costume. They range from odorless and invisible, to hazy and wafting, to thick and impermeable. His gases have in the past caused unconsciousness, hallucinations, nullified Spider-Man's danger sense, dissolved Spider-Man's webbing, or made victims highly suggestible, letting him coax information out of them, alter their perceptions of reality, etc. He also occasionally employs high-voltage electrical blasters in his gloves. Mysterio also uses robotic doubles, holographic projectors and image inducers of various sizes and qualities, letting him produce many kinds of illusions.

Quentin Beck has extensive knowledge of hand-to-hand combat techniques learned as a stuntman. He is an expert designer of special effects devices and stage illusions, as well as a master hypnotist and prestidigitator. He also has amatuer knoweldge of chemistry and robotics.
