LOCKJAW

LOCKJAW

Real Name: Lockjaw
First Appearance: Fantastic Four (Vol. 1) #45, December 1965

Powers: Lockjaw is a dog mutated into his present form after exposure to the Terrigen Mists, a mutagenic or mutation-causing substance discovered by the Inhuman scientist Randac. It is potent enough to cause mutagenic-wide changes in any living organism from exposure to it. For a time, it was thought that Lockjaw was actually a hideously deformed Inhuman, mutated into dog-like form by the Terrigen Mists. But it was later revealed that he is an animal, perhaps the first, exposed to the Terrigen Mists.

Lockjaw is essentially a very large, very intelligent canine. His jaws can produce more than a half-ton of pressure, he can consume metal and other materials too tough for a normal dog's stomach, and he is capable of understanding a great deal of spoken commands (or unspoken, as is the case with Black Bolt). Lockjaw can teleport across considerable distances. He can easily reach anywhere in the world or travel from Earth to the moon and back. Certain instances indicate he can teleport intergalactic distances, although he may require multiple jumps in order to cross that space. Lockjaw can somewhat selectively teleport other people and objects with him, providing they are close enough to be covered by his transit effect. Lockjaw's ability to teleport into enclosed and unfamiliar spaces indicates he has some capacity to 'port blindly without worrying about materializing inside solid objects. He moved through extra-dimensional space and he (if not his passengers) is consciously aware of that travel. Lockjaw occasionally crosses paths with other teleporters or extra-dimensional beings in his dimensional space.

Lockjaw possesses a supernatural sense of smell, even for a dog, and can perceive things beyond the human realm of detection. Lockjaw is sensitive to energy wavelengths and extra-dimensional vibrations through his antenna. He is able to detect the passage of beings through extra-dimensional space around him, even if he is in Euclidian space at the time. He can detect familiar people and objects across uncharted distances, "hear" calls from his masters to teleport into their presence, "smell" trails across the vacuum of space, and so on.
