VINCENTE

VINCENTE

Real Name: Vincente Cimetta
First Appearance: Generation Next (Vol. 1) #1, March 1995

Powers: Vincente was a mutant with the power to alter the physical state of his body, converting from a solid to a liquid or gas at will. His gaseous state displayed toxic properties, rendering people unconscious or causing them to become delirious and faint. He could also bond his molecules with whatever compound or element he touches, becoming one with it while both adapting duplicating its physical properties. He once adapted the properties of dirt, for instance.

*This is Vincente from Earth-295 (aka "The Age of Apocalypse"). His Earth-616 counterpart appeared later in Generation X (Vol. 1) #12, February 1996.

NANNY & THE ORPHAN-MAKER

NANNY & THE ORPHAN-MAKER

Real Names: Eleanor Murch (Nanny); Peter (Orphan Maker)
First Appearance: X-Factor (Vol. 1) #30, July 1988

Powers: Nanny was a cyborg telepath. As a mutant, she possessed very limited telepathic abilities. On their own, she seemed capable of using her powers for little more than defense from other psionic attacks or detection. She carried a supply of will-sapping chemical "pixie-dust" which made people more pliant to her mental commands. After a burst of pixie-dust, she could place people in an easily-controlled trance, cause them to perceive her as a comforting parent or caregiver, and warp their emotions to make them dependent on her. When used against adults, she often reduced them mentally to childhood before manipulating them.

Nanny's cyborg body was designed by her when she was a scientist for the anti-mutant organization known as the Right, and they forcibly grafted her into it after she uncovered their true anti-mutant purpose and revealed her mutant nature. However, being trapped in the suit made her insane. The egg-shaped suit gave her enhanced strength and durability, a rocket-propulsion backpack for flight (with a peak velocity below 760 miles per hour), a repulsor field to repel attackers, and integrated weapons like hunter-seeker missiles. It also houses energy blasters, teleportation technology, mutant detection scanners, and holographic image projectors. She may have some knowledge of biology, having designed technology to physically de-age others. She sometimes carries blaster weapons and a small lance capable of electric shock. Nanny’s various flight ships, controlled via her armor’s cybernetics, have included extendable landing legs and grappling arms, advanced computer and tracking systems, a drop-down ladder, holographic projectors, de-aging technology, S.H.I.E.L.D. surplus Life Model Decoys, a smaller decoy ship, self-destruct systems, an armory, and suspended animation chambers.

The Orphan-Maker is either a child or a grown man reduced to childhood mentally like Nanny's other charges. Although he is allegedly a very powerful mutant, he has never demonstrated any mutant abilities, and is always wrapped inside his fully-covering body armor. The suit gives him superhuman strength and resistance to physical injury. It is specially ray-shielded to refract Cyclops's optic blasts and other energy attacks. He often uses jet boots and a variety of hand-held firearms. His second armor was larger and contained bio-mechanical components, allowing him to "grow" weapons out of the armor and onto his forearms.

SCALPHUNTER

SCALPHUNTER

Real Name: John Greycrow
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #211, November 1986

Powers: Scalphunter is a mutant whose abilities went unspecified for quite some time. Though self-stated to be a mutant early on, no specific power was attributed to him.

It was long-assumed that it may be enhanced senses, or perhaps an intuitive power like Forge or a technoforming power like Madison Jeffries, given the way he would quickly assemble various weapons and devices from the components on his jumpsuit. Evidence indicates that this power allows him to manipulate mechanical components, assembling them into a variety of different configurations by modifying their shape and construction. He wears a costume that gives him easy access to a wide variety of components to manipulate. He regularly assembles a wide variety of firearms and projectile weapons from his vest, and the accompanying ammunition.

In recent years, however, it has been shown that he possesses a retarded aging process and hyper-regenerative powers, letting him regenerate lost limbs and recover from multiple fatal gunshot wounds without lasting injury.

A former United States soldier, he is an uncanny marksman, a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, an experienced pilot, and an extraordinary master of conventional weaponry (including pistols, rifles, Uzis, shotguns, laser guns, miniature cannons, flamethrowers, knives, and grenade launchers).

FIRESTAR

FIRESTAR

Real Name: Angelica Jones
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #193, May 1985

Powers: Firestar is a mutant whose power continuously absorbs electromagnetic energy from her environment (as well as from the sun and other stars) into her body and converts them into microwaves, comparatively short waves of electromagnetic energy. She can then manipulate these microwaves for various effects.

When she is actively manipulating microwaves, a glowing fiery aura of energy surrounds her body and emits heat. Unless she consciously controls it, the active microwaves radiate outward from her body in all directions, usually as heat beams or downward as thermal updrafts for flight. She most often uses her power to generate heat. There is no known upper limit to the temperatures her heat beams can reach, though she has enough control of her power to produce low-intensity heat for smaller, less destructive purposes (such as reheating food or warming coffee in a cup). Her power can melt most metals within seconds, she has reduced multiple steel girders to slag almost instantly and melted bullets in mid-air before they could even strike her. To date, Adamantium is the sole metal that is sufficiently durable to withstand Firestar’s power. She can use her power to release heat, light, and radiation into her environment at various intensities. She can project microwave blasts which have a thermo-concussive effect, heating objects so that they melt, while the super-heated and pressurized air created by the microwaves' passing may knock the target back or down. She can reduce solid rock to a molten state, burn through brick or concrete barriers, and sear through thick stone walls fast enough to fly through them without pausing. By firing visible microwave bursts into the sky, she can create intensely bright flares.

By generating short, tightly-focused microwave bursts, she can scramble electronic systems without visibly damaging the hardware in question. Similarly, she can generate low-level microwave fields which disrupt communication wavelengths or impede surveillance equipment. Her large-scale microwave pulse once scrambled or melted all the electronics in and around a city square. Her microwave frequencies sometimes disrupted certain forms of telepathy by screening out neural control signals, making her resistant to some forms of mind control and allowing to free others’ minds from similar influence if they’re within her range.

Her microwaves can also disrupt other-dimensional energies, such as the Darkforce. Her flight capacity operates by channeling microwaves and super-heated air into a downward and/or backward thrust, enabling her to fly at high speeds with great maneuverability. Her power generates enough propulsive thrust to carry her body weight and an additional 500 pounds. She requires a spacesuit or similar protective gear to function in outer space, but is far more powerful in that environment as space grants her more direct access to greater amounts of electromagnetic energy; also, while in space, she can wield larger amounts of microwave energy without damaging her surrounding environment. She has proven capable of hurting cosmic beings such as Supernova or opening space warps through which travelers can cover vast distances instantly.

Firestar's mutation was apparently incompletely formed, resulting in her still being vulnerable to microwave radiation and its potential side effects like cancer or sterility. Hank Pym designed a full body sheathe of micro-circuitry to be worn under her costume. It absorbed the excess microwave energy that was affecting her cells and diverted it in a way that would catalyze her natural immunity to her own powers. She is now functionally immune to microwave radiation.

Angelica Jones has had combat training under Emma Frost, the Night Thrasher, Andrew Chord, Tai, and Captain America, with a particular emphasis on aerial combat given her flight powers. She has taken ballet classes and has some equestrian training.

TAROT

TAROT

Real Name: Marie-Ange Colbert
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Tarot has the mutant ability to take two-dimensional images and manifest them as life-sized animated constructs of tangible psionic energy which operate under her mental command. She almost exclusively employs this power through the tarot decks she carries, summoning up any number of creatures to do her bidding including scythe carrying Death, witches, demons, devils, etc. After her death and resurrection, Tarot has demonstrated the ability to imbue herself with the aspect of these images. Instead of creating a Death construct, she formed the executioner robes on her own body and materialized a scythe for personal use.

Tarot has also prescient abilities, allowing her to predict the future on different occasions, often through the use of her tarot decks or merely a highly advanced form of "intuition" she relies upon

JETSTREAM

JETSTREAM

Real Name: Haroun ibn Sallah al-Rashid
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Jetstream was born with the mutant ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it through his skin. He could release the energy downward as a propulsive effect that enabled him to fly at subsonic speeds while maintaining a high degree of maneuverability. He was not immune to the harmful effects of his powers like most mutants and accidentally set himself on fire as he flew. He underwent extensive cybernetic surgery, including virtually replacing his entire lower body with bionic components. He then focused his flight power through a retractable bionic rocket pack and had an array of navigational components and software in his brain that increased his maneuverability in the air. This enabled him to negotiate building hallways at top speed, dodge projectiles, weave through elaborate obstacle courses, etc.

WARPATH

WARPATH

Real Name: James Proudstar
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Formerly Thunderbird II, Warpath’s mutant abilities have granted him a multitude of enhanced physical attributes. He possesses the same powers as that of his older brother, Thunderbird I, and more. He initially possessed only a moderate level of superhuman strength, speed, durability, and endurance. His muscle tissue is extremely dense and distributed in such a way as to give him massive shoulders, thighs, and arms. His skin is extremely dense as well, with an additional leathery epidermis, granting him superhuman durability. He possesses oversized lungs and a respiratory system that allows him maximum wind and endurance with a minimum of oxygen intake. As time passed, he developed greater and greater levels of strength as his height and muscle mass increased dramatically with age. He currently stands over 7' tall, possesses somewhere in the range of Class 90 strength, and is considerably resistant to physical injury, to the point of being bulletproof. Warpath began to develop new attributes to his power set shortly after being mind-controlled by Tessa, including the ability to run at over 100 mph and increased reflexes and perceptual ability. He now has excellent night vision and can efficiently process high-speed visual information, as well as possessing increased hearing and senses of touch and smell.

When the High Evolutionary temporarily removed the active mutant gene from Earth's population, the reversion of this effect "rebooted" the power templates of many mutants. Warpath seemed to have become stronger and more invulnerable than before after this, but the most obvious development was that he could now fly under his own power. Presently, however, his power levels seem dramatically reduced compared to what they have been in the past. He has used a quarterstaff in combat in the past, and recently begun using a pair of Vibranium hunting knives, which he can throw with uncanny accuracy.

James Proudstar is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant trained by both Cable and Wolverine. He is also well-versed in the traditional skills of his native Apache, including tracking, hunting, and wilderness survival.

ROULETTE

ROULETTE

Real Name: Jennifer Stavros
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Roulette possesses the mutant ability to manipulate the probability fields surrounding people or objects.

She can demonstrate her power through physical contact or by generating discs of solidified psionic energy. The discs contain two different colorations: Red discs for “good luck” and black discs for “bad luck”. The discs burst upon impact and cause a sudden flux in probabilities to occur around whatever target they strike. It was presumed that Roulette could generate a “good luck” effect around herself, thereby enhancing probabilities for her own sake.

Striking with black disks would cause varying effects, such as causing her opponents to slip up or temporarily lose their powers, make floors or objects collapse or burst into flames, cause mechanical failures, and so on. Her red disks were used more rarely, but in one instance she used a black disk to short out Speedball's power, and a red disk to reactivate it an uncontrollably high level. Also, by touching Cypher during a poker game, she altered his odds so that he couldn't help but win each hand (though his mutant linguistics power may have played a part in his success as well).

CATSEYE

CATSEYE

Real Name: Sharon Smith
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Catseye was born with the mutant ability to transmorph into various feline forms. She was born in her feline form and lived as a cat for many years until she was taught to nurture and develop her human aspects. Normally, she possessed lavender hair, cat-like eyes, and a prehensile furry tail, even in human form. She was able to fully transform into a regularly-sized, purple furred housecat, or into a human/panther-like hybrid. In her "supercat" form, Catseye was more than 7 feet tall/long, and comfortable on her hind legs or all fours. She had heightened strength, speed, agility, endurance, and reflexes, sharpened claws on her fingers and toes, fangs, a stronger tail, and excellent senses including night vision and a highly acute sense of smell.

EMPATH

EMPATH

Real Name: Manuel Alfonso Rodrigo de la Rocha
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #16, June 1984

Powers: Empath was born with the mutant ability to telepathically sense and manipulate the emotional states, desires, and moods of other people around him. This sensitivity allows him to detect the presence of sentient beings in his vicinity, with the sensation being clearer the stronger and more intense their emotional state is at the time. He is able to force intense feelings onto other people such as love, hate, anger, fear, doubt, and so forth, and can attribute these feelings to a specific subject (his victim will love/hate/fear what he tells them to). By instilling men or women with feelings of adoration and devotion to him, he can force people to be willing to do whatever he asks of them. He can also render people virtually emotionless for a time, preventing them from experiencing any strong emotion to leave them calm and docile. Though his power can be used like a blunt instrument, Empath also learned subtlety: By introducing minor emotional sensations into the minds of others, he created a situation where the victim's own brain (working to make sense of itself) would interpret these feelings for them. This type of manipulation, while not immediately as strong, created emotions in people that felt more genuine and lasted longer without Empath's direct influence because the person convinced themselves of these feelings on their own.

WILD CHILD

WILD CHILD

Real Name: Kyle Gibney
First Appearance: Alpha Flight (Vol. 1) #1, August 1983

Powers: Wild Child was a latent mutant whose feral attributes were triggered by the Secret Empire, and he was later indoctrinated with cell samples taken from Wyre, a mercenary selling his body to "The Breed" in order to produce living weapons.

As Wild Child, Kyle Gibney possesses heightened speed, agility, stamina, and reflexes, enhanced senses that give him acute night vision, increased hearing, and the ability to detect and track scents, pronounced sharpened tips to his finger and toenails, and a hyper-regenerative power enabling him to quickly recover from all forms of physical injury. However he was also borderline feral, a savage whose bloodlust was difficult to manage.

After the government sponsored Gamma Flight team disbanded, Nemesis apparently took Kyle to Department K for chemical therapy and engineering. He was physically altered so that he no longer resembled a mad dog in human skin, but became handsome and muscular. His healing powers were enhanced, but on the other hand his senses and claws were suppressed through psychotherapy and regular medication that dampened his animal instincts and inclinations. Kyle operated like this for a time as Weapon Omega, having now been classically trained in various fighting disciplines, but began having difficulty repressing his true nature. Ultimately, he adopted the identity of Wildheart, as a balance between his Wild Child and Weapon Omega sides. In a still-unrevealed occurrence, though, Kyle reverted back to his canine appearance, losing his handsome looks and becoming Wild Child once more.

REVANCHE

REVANCHE

Real Name: Kwannon
First Appearance: X-Men (Vol. 2) #17, February 1993

Powers: Revanche, in her original body, possessed low-level mutant empathic abilities.

After switching bodies and merging minds with with the mutant telepath Psylocke (Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock), she took the code-name "Revanche" and became a powerful telepath, capable of mind reading, thought projection, and creating a psychic katana blade made of pure telepathic energy similar to Psylocke’s “psychic knife”. She eventually died of the Legacy Virus, an act which restored Psylocke’s full mind and powers back to her.

After an encounter with Sapphire Styx, Betsy Braddock's Asian body died and was replaced by her original British body. As a side-effect, Kwannon seems to have somehow been resurrected in her original form as well. Because of the changes Kwannon's body has been through, she now possesses both the telepathic and telekinetic abilities Betsy had when she was last in that body and now goes by the name "Psylocke".

Kwannon is also a skilled ninja with years of training in martial arts.

MAGMA

MAGMA

Real Name: Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #8, October 1983

Powers: Magma is a geothermal conduit, her mutant power grants her total control over the Earth’s molten core. She can manipulate the earth beneath her feet, creating seismic tremors, opening up deep fissures in the ground, or reshaping the earth to cause columns or pillars to shoot up into the air. She can hurl chunks of rock over a distance or cause landslides to collapse heavy amounts of dirt and rock over an opponent. She can also restructure her environment to cause volcanic activity, making spurts of lava come shooting out of an otherwise seismically-stable patch of ground. By focusing the heat from the earth's core, Magma can ignite flames in her hands and project them outwards as fiery plasma blasts, or radiate extreme temperatures in all directions. She can also create "magma blasts", levitating chunks of rock and then melting them before hurling them at a target, thus creating high-temperature projectiles with a solid impact. Her powers are heavily reliant on her contact with the earth. Earlier, her powers quickly faded if she broke contact with the ground.

Over the years, she has developed her abilities so that she can accumulate a supply of geothermal energy in her body as a "reserve tank" to fuel her power when separated from the earth. She can even fly for short periods by manipulating thermal updrafts, completely breaking her ties to the ground. Magma possesses only a limited ability to access her powers while in her normal state. She is highly resistant to flame and extreme temperatures and can exert some level of flame and seismic activity, but only accesses the full scope of her powers once she enters her Magma form. Once transformed, her body is composed of semi-fluid molten rock which gives off light and heat. She can increase her body's production of both through a mental command. Magma possesses an increased resistance to physical impact in this state, and indeed her body is largely immune to physical harm. Magma only experiences pain in her molten state due to residual neural feedback, but otherwise has no physiology or vital organs that can really be harmed. Should she transform back to normal while her molten form is still damaged, the injuries would translate into physical ones, but by remaining in her molten form long enough and soaking up geothermal energy, she can withstand most forms of physical injuries done to her transformed state, even potentially life-threatening ones.

BEDLAM & KING BEDLAM (aka THE BEDLAM BROTHERS)

BEDLAM & KING BEDLAM (aka THE BEDLAM BROTHERS)

Real Names: Jesse Aaronson (Bedlam); Christopher Aaronson (King Bedlam)
First Appearances: X-Force (Vol. 1) #82, October 1998 (Bedlam); X-Force (Vol. 1) #87, March 1999 (King Bedlam)

Powers: Jesse and Chris Aaronson are brothers whose mutant abilities emanate energy waves that create disturbances in specific energy signals.

Bedlam’s mutant power generated electromagnetic interference, scrambling any electronic device in his range that he focused on. He could use his power to disrupt various form of machinery, from as simple as popping open an electronic lock to crashing an entire power plant or computer network. Through practice, he learned how to produce a neural EMP, an electromagnetic pulse attuned to the electro-chemical processes of the human brain, temporarily shutting down the minds of any living thing caught in his blast radius. Through precision and skill, Bedlam could use his mutant power to trigger certain responses in the human body that are controlled by electro-chemical activity, like pain. Bedlam was also sensitive to electromagnetic waves, enabling him to detect the presence of electronic systems and pick up certain transmitting wavelengths mentally.

King Bedlam has the mutant ability to produce telepathic interference. This psionic effect protects his own mind from being manipulated by telepaths and can be projected outwards to disorient and disable his opponents. People affected by his mental attacks may become incapable of concentrating on any conscious action, and might even be completely disabled to the point where they can't even stand up, collapsing into a semi-conscious heap. A signature of his power is that the victims begin randomly speaking disconnected words.

MR. SINISTER

MR. SINISTER

Real Name: Nathaniel Essex
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #221, September 1987

Powers: Nathaniel Essex was a biologist in Victorian England when he received his abilities through bodily augmentations by the mutant known as Apocalypse. Apocalypse’s transformation of him served to activate his latent “x-factor” gene making him a mutant.

The transformation initially left him with pale white skin, an increased lifespan, and apparently some level of enhanced strength and resilience. He later incorporated the shape-shifting cells of a time-traveler mutant named Courier into his genetic structure, and manipulated them to their ultimate potential to give himself a number of special abilities. Mr. Sinister possesses superhuman strength, endurance, reflexes, and apparently an endless lifespan. He can manipulate the density and structure of his body to become nigh-invulnerable, or simply allow his regenerative powers to handle any damage. Sinister has had a baseball-sized hole blown straight through his skull and his upper body nearly severed from his lower, and in both cases he experienced no pain or discomfort. The damage regenerated itself completely within a matter of minutes. Despite false information he once gave to the X-Men, he is not vulnerable to Cyclops' optic blasts whatsoever. Though his shape-shifting powers are not as extensive as Apocalypse's, Sinister can still transform himself in moments into any human shape or form he can imagine.

He has also demonstrated the power to fire concussive energy blasts from his hands, and certain telekinetic and telepathic powers such as mind control, astral projection, the creation of mental blocks in his opponents' minds, and psionic backlashes to disable telepaths attempting to assault his mind. He also commands a tesseract laboratory, which employs folding space technology to access multiple locations around the world simultaneously. This technology also enables Sinister to teleport to and from virtually anywhere on the globe instantaneously.

A genius in genetics, Mr. Sinister is a brilliant biologist and a skilled surgeon. He is an expert in the science of cloning.

HAVOK

HAVOK

Real Name: Alexander Summers
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #54, March 1969

Powers: Havok’s mutant power is that his body constantly absorbs ambient cosmic energy (ambient stellar radiation, x-rays, and even gamma rays) into his body and stores it within special enclaves in his body cells. He can then release that energy as waves of force that heat the air in its path, turning it into plasma, the super-heated state of matter. This energy radiates out from his chest as concentric rings that expand larger and larger as he powers up. In discharging a plasma blast, he normally focuses it along his arms and out from his fists, but can in fact cause the rings to angle and discharge out in any direction from his body.

His plasma blasts instantly raise the temperature of whatever they strike thousands of degrees, and this sudden shift in thermal energy causes most objects to violently explode or simply disintegrate. Havok has learned how to divert the impact of his plasma blasts so that they only displace the air in his path, causing concussive shockwaves which are still effective in battle but far less lethal than turning a direct plasma blast on a living being.

Originally, Havok could not control his power and wore a suit that monitored and regulated his energy output. Eventually, he overcame this difficulty though training. Havok is also immune to the optic blasts of his brother, Cyclops, the biochemical energy blasts of his younger maternal half-brother, X-Treme, and vice-versa.

Alex Summers holds a masters degree in geophysics with some doctoral work completed. He is also an instinctive tactician and strategist.
