TEMPO

TEMPO

Real Name: Heather Tucker
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #86, February 1990

Powers: Tempo was born with the mutant power of temporal distortion. Through psionic means, she can propel herself off the ground at high speeds by manipulating tachyon or chronoton particles that disrupt temporal mechanics. This creates a temporal distortion effect in her wake, which she can concentrate on targets by flying past or in tight circles around them.

Her mutant power causes whatever she effects to shift into a different timeframe: People or objects would either accelerate or slow down relative to normal space-time. She can reduce people to moving at extremely low speeds, immobilize projectiles in mid-flight, or greatly accelerate people so that they move at superhuman speeds relative to their surroundings. She can also direct her time-distortion power from a distance mentally, without having to use her flight as a focus for it.

PRODIGY

PRODIGY

Real Name: David Alleyne
First Appearance: The New Mutants (Vol. 2) #4, October 2003

Powers: Prodigy is a psychomimetic, his mutant power allows him to assimilate knowledge from the minds of people nearby. He is not a telepath, and cannot pick up on what other people are thinking or read their memories. Instead, his power is based on accumulated factual knowledge, which is stored in a different part of the brain.

His psychomimicry makes David just as knowledgeable about any subject in school as his teachers are. He has learned languages, culinary skill, medicine, world history, even genetics by simply being in the presence of someone with that knowledge. He can even duplicate martial arts abilities through kinetic memory, his body "remembering" the stance and moves of a skilled fighter. This information originally faded from his memory soon after he left the person's vicinity. Prodigy was not always fully aware of how his power was operating, he might suddenly begin speaking in another language as someone comes into his range, and wouldn't always know who he was receiving his information from. Additionally, his power causes him to intuitively read body language, allowing him to sense and anticipate an opponent's attack before it comes, allowing him to avoid it.

After M-Day, David lost his psychomimetic powers, but the Stepford Cuckoos managed to tap his residual memories and coax back to the surface all the information David had ever tapped from the minds of others. He could no longer pick up on new information, but now possessed a vast storehouse of knowledge. He's since regained his power.

MAGGOTT

MAGGOTT

Real Name: Japheth
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #345, June 1997

Powers: Maggott’s mutant ability is actually his mutated digestive system, which exists as two symbiotic slug-like creatures in a hollowed out cavity in his gut. To release the slugs, Maggott has them gnaw their way out through his front. The slugs would expand to nearly twice their original size when they reach the open air, and secrete a chemical slime while exiting which enables Maggott's gut to reseal itself moments after they depart.

The slugs appear techno-organic and Maggott named them “Eany” and “Meany”. Once active, the slugs possess a level of sentience of their own, but respond to Maggott's mental and verbal commands as well. Each slug has a multi-jointed jaw and is capable of producing acidic fluids enabling it to rapidly chew through and digest virtually any form of solid matter in its path. This process transmitted food energy back to Maggott which increases his stature, giving his skin a blue pigment, and augmenting his muscle mass to superhuman levels of strength.

Because of his mutated digestive system, Maggott can't eat like a regular person, the slugs have to eat for him. In order for him to actually survive, however, Maggott has to allow the slugs to bore their way back into his stomach cavity and release the nutrients they ingested inside his system. Upon re-entry, the slugs' chemical secretions reseal the gaping hole in his gut as well. It is a painful process which Maggott has to endure at least five times a day.

He also seemed to possess an unexplained psychometric power enabling him to draw psychic imprints from his environment, replaying in his mind's-eye events which once took place in his general vicinity.

SYNCH

SYNCH

Real Name: Everett Thomas
First Appearance: X-Men (Vol. 2) #36, September 1994

Powers: Synch’s mutation, his "synchronistic aura", is both his mutant power and the expression of it.

The “synchronistic” or mutagenic aura is the radiant, but typically invisible energy signature produced as a by-product of the x-gene. This energy signature is unique to each mutant and is what Cerebro scans for when searching for mutants. This energy is also the biological power source that fuels a mutant's powers and abilities, whether they're energy-related or not. All mutants possess it and it surrounds them at all times. But unlike other mutants, Synch can actively feel and manipulate his own aura, and through it, feel the aura of other mutants. His aura, which manifests itself visually as a rainbow effect, functions similarly to a divining rod, "aiming" itself towards other mutant presences. He can use it to pinpoint other mutants in his immediate area and is sensitive enough to differentiate between familiar or new mutant signatures. It can give him a general direction of any nearby mutant he wishes to focus on, and can "lead" him to that mutant even through the winding tunnels of the New York sewer system. His aura also enables him to perceive Emplate when the villain was out of sync with our dimensional plane, functionally invisible.

The primary use of his aura, however, is to synchronize it to that of other mutants and then duplicate it, allowing him to mimic the mutant powers of anyone within his range. He can either manifest these new powers personally, or conduct the mutant power signature through his aura, causing it to function in new and different ways. For instance, Everett could produce a sonic scream from his throat like Banshee, project fireworks like Jubilee, or manifest increased mass and strength from Sabretooth. Conversely, he can cause his aura to discharge offensively by duplicating Chamber's bio-blast, convert it into a force field through synchronizing with the diamond-hard Penance, or lash out with it as a battering ram of force equal to the raw strength of Hemingway.

Typically, Synch chooses to manifest powers through his aura when the physical mutations involved are potentially hazardous or difficult to control. Initially, he’d have his aura mimic Chamber's bio-blasts instead of doing so himself, realistically to avoid blowing out his chest as Chamber did when his mutant power manifested. Similarly, his aura created a force field instead of him mimicking Penance's diamond skin directly, and it created an energy ram instead of manifesting Hemingway's tremendous size and strength to avoid his potentially unsettling mutations. As he became more confident and adept in the use of his powers, Everett began testing his powers more, like duplicating Chamber’s powers directly.

Although he doesn't require physical contact to sync with their powers, the farther away a mutant is the more difficult it is for Synch's aura to properly replicate their abilities. His death occurred because M (Monet St. Croix) was too far away for him to fully adapt her invulnerability power, and he once needed Skin to snake his elastic skin in close enough to touch before mimicking his elasticity. Once he has a solid lock on a mutant's energy signature, though, Synch can maintain these adopted powers for an extended period of time, up to at least 24 hours after he leaves the presence of the original mutant. He was able to utilize multiple mutant abilities simultaneously.

Everett is also capable of using his aura to absorb mutant bio-energy passively, processing it through his system. This capability made Synch practically immune to the harmful effects of any mutant energy projection. He once absorbed a combined bio-blast of both Banshee and Chamber's energies without injury or discomfort. Finally, there is some evidence that Synch's powers could be extended beyond merely interacting with other mutant signatures. He demonstrated certain enhanced perceptions at times, such as sensing the build-up of a mechanically-activated teleportation beam moments before it whisked away his opponents, and synching with a living mist to see through it into the other-dimensional realm that the mist acted as a gateway for.

Recently, it has been shown that he can synch with non-mutant superhumans so as to replicate their powers, and retain the powers he copies as well, though the exact nature of his power’s evolution remains unclear.

MONICA RAMBEAU

MONICA RAMBEAU

Real Name: Monica Rambeau
First Appearance: The Amazing Spider-Man Annual (Vol. 1) #16, October 1982

Powers: Monica Rambeau, (alias Captain Marvel II, Photon, and later Pulsar) received her powers after accidentally tumbling into an experimental power grid interfacing with extra-dimensional space. The resulting discharge consumed her body and transformed her into living electromagnetic energy. Monica thus gained the power to access an extra-dimensional interface to transposition her organic mass with any wavelength on the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, gamma rays, radio waves, x-rays, microwaves, and even neutrino particles which aren't actually on the spectrum.

In her human form, Monica is capable of firing electromagnetic force blasts from her hands, by displacing only that small portion of her mass to funnel energy from her source dimension. When she transforms completely, Monica's mind becomes an astral specter animating and controlling her energy form, which still outwardly maintains the shape and appearance of her body. She can fly at the speed of light in all of her energy forms, and manifests various abilities depending on which state she's in, including invisibility, intangibility, projection of holographic images, blinding light, heat, electricity, explosive or disintegration beams of energy, etc. She is naturally capable of surviving in adverse environments or the vacuum of space in her energy forms, and communicates in this form through a type of radio broadcasting. Monica has also perfected the ability to manipulate the visible light components of her energy form into order to duplicate the colors and shades of her normal appearance. Thus, she is able to make her energy form look indistinguishable from her human form, though she maintains her intangibility and flight powers.

At one point, however, Monica lost a great deal of her mass in energy form when she was dispersed through the ocean. When she managed to return to human form, she was physically emaciated by the loss of mass and incapable of using her powers. She eventually recovered physically and her powers returned, but in a largely altered format. Monica no longer transformed her body but now projected a dimensional interface field around herself that manipulated mechanical energy and force. This field protected her from physical injury by displacing impact, and allowed her to fly by producing thrust at roughly the speed of sound. She could also use applied force from the field to lift enormous weights by pushing up from beneath them, or amplifying the force of her punches to strike someone with superhuman strength. As her powers continued to regenerate, Monica became capable of performing many of the feats she was previously capable of, such as discharging heat, light, or electricity, and becoming invisible by bending light waves around her body. Only after an encounter with the Stranger, though, was Monica able to regain her ability to transform into energy forms and back. She seems to maintain the ability to fly in a solid state on top of her original powers, though. For a time, Monica called out the names of her energy conversions in order to activate them: Exawatt Gamma-Ray Laser, Microwave Storm, Infrared Stab, Ultraviolet Nova, Petawatt Laser, etc.

Later, Monica adopted the code name "Spectrum" and began exploring new limits to her powers after the encouragement of T'Challa and a small adjustment of her energy levels by the Blue Marvel. She began to recognize that energy is her default state, and transforming from energy into flesh and blood is her actual power. By recognizing that she is only simulating a human form, Monica has begun stepping away from human frailties and limitations. She no longer requires outside sources of biological sustenance or sleep, and can "heal" injuries to her human form simply by converting into her photonic state. Monica can alter her human form to create different costumes or attire, and has started practicing "shape-changing", altering her form into other human appearances. She can even merge with someone's reflection, becoming part of the light reflecting their image off of a glass. Monica has a literal photographic memory, with all her recollections since becoming Captain Marvel stored in the light-energy matrix that now makes up her mind. She has also determined that she possesses enough raw power in her energy state to destroy planets, although she has yet to test that in practice.

Monica Rambeau is a college graduate as well as a police academy graduate. An excellent swimmer with extensive nautical experience and a good detective, she has strong leadership skills, is an excellent markswomanship and unarmed combatant, and can speak fluent French and Portuguese. A former lieutenant with the New Orleans Harbor Patrol, she is experienced in law enforcement.

BISHOP

BISHOP

Real Name: Lucas Bishop
First Appearance: The Uncanny X-Men (Vol. 1) #282, November 1991

Powers: Bishop has the mutant ability to absorb various forms of energy on contact. Once internalized, the energy is normally metabolized into his personal reserves. Energy stored there boosts his natural physical vitality, amplifying his strength, endurance, and reaction time. Despite his enhanced physical build, Bishop's energized strength level easily exceeds a few thousand pounds when fully charged. Physical exertion depletes his additional energy, and he can also release his reserves into bio-concussive blasts generated from his hands. He also occasionally employs plasma rifles which have special conductive grips allowing him to focus his energy into the guns as a power source, using up less energy than his blasts do.

In his early appearances, Bishop demonstrated the power to redirect energy in the same state he had absorbed it. He could, for instance, absorb Storm's lightning and then fire electrical blasts of his own. Bishop was apparently capable of using his personal reserves as raw fuel to feed any energy he was redirecting. In the above situation, this meant he could fire multiple electrical blasts, far more energy than the single lightning bolt he was struck with, by tapping into energies he had previously stored to continue recharging the electrical energy for his use.

He can absorb most kinds of energy, including kinetic, electromagnetic, and psionic. His system works best with active and directed energy signatures, like bio-blasts, laser guns, or electrical power lines. From ambient radiation, sunlight, and static electricity he picks up little to any charge from those sort of passive energies. He also cannot fully overcome solid-based kinetic assaults. Pure kinetic energy blasts or concussive explosions he can adjust to. He can absorb some of the kinetic energy from projectile assaults like bullets or crossbow bolts, but not enough to prevent them from penetrating his flesh. He's also still vulnerable to blunt force trauma or pressure based attacks. He also had a bionic right arm which amplifies his strength, contains retractable wire-guided pincers, and enables time-travel.

Bishop hails from Earth-1191 in an alternate future timeline roughly 100 years from now. In his timeline, he was a member of the X.S.E. (Xavier Security Enforcers), a mutant law enforcement agency inspired by the X-Men. A trained police officer skilled in homicidal investigations, he has many years of armed/unarmed combat training and is a superb marksman.

STORM

STORM

Real Name: Ororo Munroe
First Appearance: Giant Size X-Men (Vol. 1) #1, May 1975

Powers: Storm has the omega-level mutant ability to manipulate the meteorological energy patterns of the planet she is currently on, allowing her to manipulate and control the weather. She is linked to Earth specifically, and tends to require some time to readjust her powers to the different environments and biospheres of other worlds. Her power can be used in space, but somewhat sporadically. Storm is sensitive to the patterns of electromagnetic energy which influence and guide weather phenomena. She can both mentally and visually recognize how weather patterns are forming, and predict rain, snowstorms, or whatever with extreme accuracy. Storm commands the wind, allowing her to summon anything from a slight breeze to a hurricane force gale. She can form cyclones and tornadoes of various sizes, and direct them to move about at her will. Naturally, she is also able to use the wind to fly.

She is able to form cloud cover on command, blocking out the sun or creating a pea-soup fog at ground level. Storm is then capable of seeding clouds in order to summon any form of precipitation: Rain, sleet, snow, hail, etc. Her power over the wind allows her to aim skyfall at any target, and make it fly almost parallel to the ground if she chooses. She can summon thunder and lightning as well, calling bolts of electricity out of the sky to strike her targets. Combining wind and rain, thunder and lightning can create monsoons and massive storms within a matter of moments. Storm can also ionize the atmosphere around her hands, giving the impressions that she is firing lightning bolts from her own body.

She can manipulate the temperature of her environment, causing sudden heat waves or drop the temperature down to sub-freezing levels.

Storm has used her power over the weather for a number of specific feats as well. She is sensitive to electricity, and can alter her vision so that she perceives her environment solely in terms of electrical flow. Controlled generation of electrical energy can scramble psionic signatures, making her mind more difficult to read or control. She can create a quasi-force field with a pressurized mass of air. She is able to manipulate water, and influence currents and such, but water is a much thicker medium than air and takes a considerable amount of power to affect. Storm also has a certain resistance to the weather effects she generates: Her body is capable of absorbing electricity without harm, and she regulates her body temperature in different climates to remain comfortable despite super-tropical or sub-freezing environments.

Storm has an extraordinary ability for lock and pocket picking, she is also an excellent marksman with handguns.
